Conservation group, Serengeti Watch, is planning a global day of recognition in protest at the proposed Serengeti highway project. The project would see a commercial highway run through the Serengeti. The conservation group believes such a development would bring thousands of trucks a day through a wilderness area that is critical to the great migration.
The first International Serengeti Day is planned for March 19 and aims to draw attention to the possible negative impacts on the eco-system of the Serengeti but also tourism revenue in Tanzania and its conservation efforts.
So far, activities include local organizers across the globe coordinating activities to help publicize the issue, including hosting awareness parties, conducting letter and postcard writing campaigns and walking to raise funds and awareness.
